Mindbody vs Sesami

Mindbody runs a studio's back office and brings its own marketplace audience. Sesami is a modern booking platform you install yourself. Where each fits.

Mindbody

An established management suite for studios and spas, with a consumer marketplace that brings its own audience.

Choose Mindbody if the marketplace is how you fill your schedule.

Sesami

A modern booking platform for service businesses. Install it yourself, take bookings today, and sell them through the checkout you already run when you charge for them.

Choose Sesami if you would rather own the customer, install it yourself, and be taking bookings today.

Mindbody and Sesami both take bookings, and that is close to where the similarity ends. They are built on different assumptions about where your business lives.

Mindbody is an established management suite for studios, spas and salons. Scheduling sits inside a much larger system covering memberships, staff, retail and marketing, and it comes with a consumer marketplace where people who have never heard of you can find and book a class. Buying it usually means a sales call and an onboarding process.

Sesami is a modern booking platform for the same businesses: salons, spas, studios, clinics and retailers. The difference is how you get started and what happens once a booking exists. You install it yourself and take bookings the same day, and when you charge for one it settles through the checkout and the counter you already use.

Where Mindbody is the better answer

If the marketplace is how you fill your schedule, that is a real advantage and Sesami has nothing equivalent. Being discoverable by people actively searching for a class near them is a distribution channel, not a feature, and you cannot replicate it with better software.

The same goes for scope. If you want one system that also handles memberships, staff scheduling, payroll-adjacent reporting and inventory, Mindbody is built for that and Sesami is not. Sesami assumes you already run a store and want bookings inside it.

Where Sesami is the better answer

If your customers already come to you, the marketplace matters less than owning the experience. Your booking page is your storefront, on your domain, styled like the rest of your brand, with no third-party app in the middle.

The bigger difference is what happens after someone picks a time. In Sesami a booking is a product, so it flows through the checkout you already use, with the payment methods, taxes, discount codes and gift cards you already have. Someone booking a facial can add a retail product to the same basket. A walk-in can be rung up at the counter and land in the same ledger as an online booking.

That matters most when services are not the whole business. A salon that also sells product, a studio with a retail wall, a brand where the booking leads to a sale: those are the cases where keeping bookings and commerce in one system stops being a convenience and starts being the point.

There is also a difference in kind, not just in scope. The others are software you run your business on, and their APIs exist so other systems can talk to them. Sesami is a platform you build on: the same booking engine the app runs on is public, with an SDK, an app platform, and access for AI agents that can book, reschedule and answer on a customer’s behalf. If you want a booking experience nobody else has, or you expect agents to be doing the booking before long, that is the difference that matters most.

Modern software, and the difference it makes

The clearest difference is one nobody puts on a comparison table. Most of these were built for a world of sales calls, onboarding fees and multi-week implementations, and they still work that way: you book a demo, you get quoted, someone configures it for you.

Sesami installs from the app store. You set up your services and take your first booking the same day, without speaking to anyone. If you outgrow the defaults there is a public API and an SDK underneath, but nothing about getting started requires a developer.

A fair summary

Mindbody is the stronger choice if marketplace discovery drives your bookings, or if you want a single suite covering memberships, staff and inventory as well as scheduling.

Sesami is the stronger choice if you would rather be running today than after an implementation, want to own the customer rather than share them with a marketplace, and want bookings and sales to land in one place.

Sesami runs deepest on Shopify, where a booking becomes a product in your catalog. It is not limited to it: the Sesami Booking Button embeds in WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer or plain HTML, and a hosted Sesami page takes bookings and payments on its own. Those are rolling out through early access now.
